Announcing MCDU – The Media Center Decoder Utility (replaces VMCD)

For Vista, TV Pack and Windows 7

Download  at http://www.whittakermoore.com/mcdu.exe

image

A couple of big new features.

  1. Take Ownership: To work round the issues with codecs being secure in Windows 7 and in some versions of Vista with TV Pack installed this option will take ownership of the default codec files and rename them to a .mcdu.bak file if you choose a non-standard codec If you then choose to go back to the standard decoders the utility will rename them back..

WARNING CHANGING THE DEFAULT MICROSOFT CODEC FOR LIVE TV CAN BREAK OTHER APPLICATIONS. RECOMMENDED ONLY FOR A PURELYMEDIA CENTER SETUP

  1. Show decoders not named video or audio. By default MCDU will show all codecs that have Video Decoder or Audio Decoder in the title – even if they are not marked as Media Center decoders. By checking this option al other decoders will be included. Use at your own risk.

image

If you are running Windows 7 Take Ownership will be checked at start up.

image image

IMPORTANT IF YOU HAVE ALREADY RENAMED THE DEFAULT MICROSOF CODEC FILES THEN THE AUTO RENAMING WILL NOT WORK. RENAME THEM BACK BEFORE USING THE UTILITY.

And finally the holy grail…. FFDSHOW being used for live tv in 7 Media Center. To get FFDShow to recognise Live TV you will need to enable the MPEG in AVI option.

Download  at http://www.whittakermoore.com/mcdu.exe

32 bit decoders have been tested. Its been coded to work with 64 bit but I’ve not been able to test it and I am not aware of any working 64 it decoders for TV other than the MS ones

Use at your own risk but I hope you find this useful

Garry.

p.s. almost forgot for TV Pack users you will now see tow decoders listed for both Video and Audio. This is because the TV Pack allows for a fallback decoder for formats the main decoder cannot work with.

Nice work, but I need some help, I have no sound in Medida Centre using My Movies2, can you suggest best codecs for Vista Media Centre?

Ric said...

doesn't work on my x64 install of vista, just flashes up in task manger and closes. any ideas? your last tool worked but didn't show any selectable decoders other than the microsoft ones, even though I have powerdvd installed.

Garry Whittaker said...

Craig - a lot of people like the cyberlink decoders in Vista. You don't say how you are trying to get sound but if from SPDIF this might help.

Ric - The old one wouldn't have shown anything other than the windows decoders as it only shows true 64 bit decoders. Not sure why the new on is not running. It should prompt for admin rights at the very least. Try looking at the file properties and seeing if it is blocked.

Great tool, seems to work fine on my Vista x64, but ffdshow just won't work in MCE, but it's another problem.
Guess I'll have to find another x64 codec :(

great post, thanks for the link! I have an "ask the expert question" that maybe you can help with. I currently have Vista 64 bit OS, and I have installed both the 32 and 64 bit versions of ffdshow (rev 2927). All my xvid/divx/etc plays fine in WMP (32 or 64 bit versions). However, in WMC no matter what I do, I cannot get it to play any video file that requires a codec. I have google'd all over, and just can not get it to work - even with the Media Control Plugin that most people seem to recommend. thanks for any help on that!

Hi

One point on ffdshow in Media Center make sure you enable both mpeg in avi and MPeg.

Can I also recommend taking a look at the posts on www..comrelating to the utility. Whilst that is a windows 7 site a lot of the points also directly relate to vista

Hi, it seems not to work in Windows 7 RC? When I change codecs everything just stops working.

Anonymous said...

I am using VISTA SP2 with TVPack2008 installed.

Setup:
I change the decoder to a Cyberlink or another one. Playing DVD stored on hard drive in Video_ts folders.

Problem:
DVD will play once but if I stop it then try to restart a DVD Folder the MEDIA CENTER will give fail with "DECODER ERROR The video decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed. Please restart Windows Media Center or the computer."

ps..
ffdshow with DVD encoding enabled will not give this problem. But don't want to use ffdshow because it does not have fast forward or rewind

Garry Whittaker said...

Ok did you use the take ownership checkbox?

Anonymous said...

yes i did apply the "TAKE OWNERSHIP" check box and tried without it.

豆腐花 said...

"enable the MPEG in AVI option."
What is it mean? I can't find such option...

Anonymous said...

DSCALER or GPL MPEG-1/2 Decoder works in VISTA in the second selection.

Anonymous said...

JUST make sure its dscaler 5 not 4.

It decodes encrypted DVD'S also.

Dscaler 4 messed up MCDU for some reason.

Unknown said...

I really can't get any of the ffdshow tryouts to work for LiveTV in MC7 with MCDU... I've enabled *all* codecs, but MC7 keeps complaining about missing decoder files when watching LiveTV.

Any tips?

Anonymous said...

Undo (set back to MS defaults) does not work in W7x64. Had to manually rename the DLLs using "take ownership" reg hack.

Per said...

Great tool. I've finally managed to get my DTS to work via analog by changing the default audio to ffdshow.
But! If I take ownership, live tv will not work (VMC). The picture in the top of this page here regarding avi/mpeg settings in ffdshow to make live tv work again, doesn't work!

Can anyone tell me, if they have made live tv work with either VMC or 7MC together with the right settings in ffdshow???? And how to do it! Preferably in VMC. Thanks!

can anyone help me with VMCD.exe, when I try to open the file I get this:
the application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b).click to close the application.

Just to warn people, this breaks the Dolby Digital audio on BBC-HD. I know it was supplied as is, but once you change to a diferent audio codec (anything at all, it seems) and then try to change back to the regular DTV-DVD audio, Dolby Digital audio is totally messed up.

Just wanted to drop in an mention the media center Moovida, i have found it really useful to sort out all the files on my computer.

Hi, thanks for all your work over the years. I have a problem with this and Win 7 though .. It changes the decoder ok but cannot seem to restore the default decoder properly.

It says it has but wmp doesnt use internal codec.

Garry Whittaker said...

Hi

Check your windows system32 folder and see if you have any .mcdu.bak files in it. If so rename these back so they end with just .dll.

Anonymous said...

A tool I was looking for a long time. I used it to change the decoder for live tv to cyberlink but this doesn't work. I get an error from MCE saying there is no decoder installed. Any idea what's going wrong?

Anonymous said...

When I open the App .. I get
"Current Values not found"

and then ignoring it, if i try to set a default decoder i get

"Unable to set registry entry - Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

What should I do?

Garry Whittaker said...

Hi Suhas

Sounds like you are running directly from the download. Please save to disk then run.

Anonymous said...

I don't get it..

I have it saved on my desktop and I'm running it.

By the way, if it helps I have Media center Edition installed on D: Drive.

Anonymous said...

I have the same problem too:

"Current values not found"

"Unable to set registry entry - Object reference not set to an instance of an object"

Please help!

There seems to be a bug in the x64 version, in that if you try to switch back, the original msmpeg2vdec.dll isn't renamed. The security hoops are annoying to try and rename it, the shortcut is to run "sfc /scanfile=c:\windows\system32\msmpeg2vdec.dll". That will let the system file checker just put the original one back.

JohnEJones said...

Doesnt work, it renames the default microsoft codec file with the extension ".bak" resulting in a no codec error when trying to watch live tv. I use Windows 7 media center. If you get this issue fix it by doing the following. Go to c:\windows\system32\msmpeg2vdec.dll.bak and delete the file extension ".bak" If you run in to a security issue you will have to adjust the permissions on that file to allow you to modify. Then change the codec bake to the default codec use the application. I'll never get that waste of time back...

I'm running W7rc 64bit w/a SAA7130 TV tuner. The tuner works fine w/Honestech TVR, but media center liveTV lags about 5 secs. behind the audio, then stops and gives a "bitrate to low" msg. after about a minute.
I have installed MCDU and fddshow and don't see appropriate codecs (tried a couple and none worked). I also don't know where to enable enable both mpeg in avi?
Help

I've installed fddshow and not seeing codecs in

Unknown said...

I reinstalled fddshow using the 64-bit version, and it shows up in mcdu. I activated fddshow for video and audio, and set default. Media center now displays "Decoder Error". I assume this is because of the enable mped in avi. Fddshow does show mpeg in avi as a codec in right window.

Unknown said...

fddshow shows MPEG in AVI as libavcodec. Is that enabling it?
Also set Merit to very high.

He ! its great to be here . Me too have something to share here . I have reviewed the Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Software and found it a wonderful utility for all both experts and novices , to recover the lost data.

I have installed the Cyberlink dvd decoder from K-lite and try to use MCDU but it does not seem to work in Windows 7 32bit. Is 'MPEG decoder' the Cyberlink one I'm looking for or not?
When trying to play a DVD in Media Center I get a decoder error. What am I doing wrong?

Anonymous said...

Tried everything, and they all failed. Sorry . . .

Garry Whittaker said...

Not had any experience using that codec. DO the default Media Center decoders work if selected.
